5 Paragraph Essay Outline for Students

Essay writing is a major topic in the English final exam for intermediate students. It is also a skill that can be helpful for subject exams such as Pakistan Studies and Islamiat that require long, essay-style answers.

Therefore, every student should practice essay writing during their exam preparation. Practice can help improve the time it takes to write essays, and can also help them understand the structure of writing exams.

Most essays follow the general 5-paragraph format. It is a relatively simple format that is easy to grasp with enough practice. However, students often neglect their exam preparation for essay writing, and as a result they use an incorrect format on the English final exam. This leads to a deduction of precious marks. So, to help you learn how to effectively write essays for the final exams, we have provided an easy-to-understand outline for writing 5-paragraph essays. Keep in mind that the essay will be written according to the topic you are given in the final exam. While the information will be specific to the essay topic, you should still follow this essay-writing outline to give the essay a proper structure. Here are examples of essay topics, taken from the 12th class English Lahore Board past papers subjective portion 2019:

  • Education System in Pakistan
  • A Visit to a Hill Station
  • Dignity of Labor
  • Patriotism

Now, in light of these various essay topics, here is the outline for a standard 5-paragraph essay.

First Paragraph - Introduction

The first paragraph is the introduction. Here, you must start with a captivating topic sentence that explains what the entire essay will be about. You will write this according to the topic that you are writing on. In the rest of the sentences in this paragraph, you will give a brief overview of the topic.

Second, Third, and Fourth Paragraph - Body

The next three paragraphs are known as the “body paragraphs”. This is where the bulk of your information will be. Here, you will explain your points, views, and arguments related to the topic. In general, you should choose three major points related to the topic to discuss, and dedicate each paragraph to one of the three points.

For example, if you are writing on the topic “Education System in Pakistan”, then the first body paragraph may discuss the cost of education in the country, the second body paragraph may discuss the accessibility of education, and the final one may discuss the quality of education in Pakistan.

This can be tricky to write at first, so draw a mind map or brief outline before you start writing. This will organize your thoughts and help you clearly understand what to write in each paragraph. You should also consult the solved past papers to get a clear picture of how each body paragraph should be structured.

Fifth Paragraph - Conclusion

The final paragraph should be the concluding one. In this, you will wrap up everything you discussed, summarize your essay, and give your final remarks. The last sentence in this paragraph should be a strong conclusion that effectively wraps up the entirety of the essay.

Practice writing essays using this 5-paragraph essay outline. You can use the previous five-year solved past papers to help you find plenty of essay topics to practice. Moreover, you can refer to the solutions in the solved past papers to get a more clear idea of the essay writing structure. This will improve your writing skills and time management, thereby helping you score top marks on your English final exam.
