Top Universities in Pakistan

In a world that is increasingly interconnected, Pakistani students look at top foreign institutions and now demand the same standards from local ones. Here at Tutoria.pk we looked at the 2018 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Ranking’s and picked out the top three Pakistani universities that made it to the list, and the ones not on the list but worth going to regardless. So while you go through your final year exam preparation, you already know where to apply and for what.

On the QS Rankings

NUST:
Ranked Between 431-440 in the QS Rankings, NUST is one of the best places to study in Pakistan. While the university is known for engineering, it has expanded into business studies and the social sciences. What holds NUST back is how the degrees are structured; for example, an Economics student won’t be able to branch out, take other subjects, and diversify his/her interests. This is disappointing because a premier institution should understand the Literature, and that students need to be exposed to many different disciplines importance of the ethics that come from the humanities, such as History and There is also the matter of sexual harassment; the students and the professors know who the predators are, but can't do anything about it because of their army affiliations. Departments, such as Mass Communication also went through significant overhauls recently. Moreover, NUST graduates often go to LUMS to gain the research skills necessary for higher education

Quaid-e-Azam University:
In the 651-700 range, Quaid-e-Azam is one of Pakistan’s oldest universities. Based in Islamabad, it's affiliated with several think-tanks that heavily influence the government's decisions. The professors seem to genuinely care about their students and groom them accordingly, which makes it appealing. However, the university's lack of funding is worrying; they have had to merge their History department with International Relations department because they lacked students. But given that they have kept these departments going at a graduate level one can see that the university is committed to providing the best education it possibly can. Despite the issues it faces, it is still ranked as the 109th university in Asia.

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)
Based in Lahore, and between 701 and 750 on the QS Rankings LUMS is known throughout Pakistan. As they say, lums ka naam heh. It is also ranked 95th in Asia. LUMS is considered the most 'liberal' school in Pakistan because it doesn’t police female students, has a sexual harassment committee to hold men accountable, and doesn't disconnect the Internet after midnight; very candalous. Originally known for its business school, it is now also known for its undergraduate program that has ties to many international universities. For example, Dr. Ayesha Jalal, one of the leading historians in South Asia teaches at Tufts University and also offers courses at LUMS. Since it hasn’t fully developed it's Master's Programs, LUMS also provides significant research opportunities to its undergraduates.
LUMS is also a private university, making it one of the most expensive,if not the most expensive, one in Pakistan. It may offer significant financial aid, but it also only bothered to get stretchers in their hostels after a student passed away. In addition, by making the SAT exam mandatory for admissions, LUMS has increased an arbitrary barrier to entry, which makes faculty and students worried about the lack of diversity on campus. LUMS graduates do make more money than other universities in Pakistan, so if you’re a graduate, don’t devalue yourself in the market.

Not ranked, but un-officially the best

National College of Arts (NCA):
With its first campus in Lahore and a second in Rawalpindi, NCA may not be on any international rankings. However, it is definitely known in Pakistan for its stellar art program. Whether its Architecture, Fine Arts, Music, Design, or Film and Television, NCA is the place to go. The place has a long history, which starts in the colonial era, and is still considered to be one of Pakistan’s leading institutions. Despite not being expensive in terms of tuition, the costs of being an artist are high, which is something to watch out for if you’re interested in any art program.

Aga Khan Medical College:
Agha Khan University is Pakistans international university. Its main campus is located in Karachi and accounts for around three-fourths of the medical research that takes place in Pakistan. It's also one of the top 350 medical universities in the world and ranks 195 in Asia itself. It also affiliated with one of the best hospitals in Pakistan. If you want to go into provides significant research opportunities to its undergraduates and is twice about. Agha Khan is as expensive as LUMS, but given the backing of the medicine or medical research, this is one place that you don’t need to think financial aid. Agha Khan Foundation, I’d believe it when they say they do offer substantial. This isn’t a comprehensive list. But these are the names that carry weight in Pakistan.
